iPhone Vs. Samsung And The Endless Debate

A few moments ago I stumbled upon this post that is by design aimed at making iPhone users feel great about their superiority over Android, or actually Samsung smartphone users.

It can also work as an advertisement for Apple to swing over anyone who is still on the fence or who’s been pondering making the switch and looking for any made-up reason to push them over the edge.

I do believe that this point of view behind the “performance” comparison is myopic at best and nefarious and infected with greed at its worst.

Apple has the lead in the smartphone market. Actually, Apple defines the trends in the smartphone market, and the rest of the competition, including Samsung dovetail in adapting to the Apple-set rules over time.

That’s not to say there aren’t any unique characteristics to each brand on the market, but we know and they know who is setting the norms.

When Apple ditched the 3.5 mm headphones port, everyone mocked it at first, bragged about ‘not doing that silly thing’ then went on to do a complete about-face and remove their own headphones ports. The same thing happened with the ‘no charger in box’ kind of bullshit that Apple claims is intended to be an environment-friendly decision instead of saying that this statement is a media wrapper for a cost-reduction and sales-boosting coup de force. I don’t think it’s escaped a lot that they’re saving a lot of money on production cost for each sold device while selling it for the same exact exorbitant price, which is in effect a subtle price hike while selling the chargers that people will still need anyways at full retail price which adds another cherry on top for their profit margins. A bloody smartphone charger barely survives past the 5-year mark at best which is just about the maximum tenure of a premium smartphone by any stretch of the imagination.

Samsung even goes the extra mile in their diluted imitation of Apple in copying their on-stage grand opening launch events with an even more lame performance that wastes everyone’s time saying a whole lot of marketing claims. I just wish they just stop lining up executives who stand on stage invoking their best Steve Jobs impersonation. I personally just wait for the MKBHD review.

So, the aforementioned article could be right about the superior performance of Apple processors, I certainly don’t know and don’t quite care. But the major allure of getting a Samsung smartphone is that it is not an iPhone. And I just mean the flagship Samsung devices, not the budget bullshit devices that you’ll have to throw away a year or two later.

As a user, you will NOT  notice the difference in performance AT ALL. You’ll still be able to search things on Google, watch YouTube, check social media and emails, watch Netflix, and play games if that’s your thing.

That’s with the added bonus that Samsung makes THE ABSOLUTE BEST screens on the market bar none, including Apple who for many years used to supply their screens from Samsung.

But the allure of a Samsung device is not just the exquisite screen or the S-pen signature stylus of its Note series, but the freedom it affords you.

Apple devices are by design intended to lock you in the ecosystem of compatible devices and torrent of paid subscription services. An Apple device is significantly limiting in the settings it allows to change, communication protocols, compatibility with other devices and ecosystems, media access and transfer, and of course, it doesn’t allow the usage of a Stylus.

iPhones make up for all of that besides their inexplicably late adoption of time-tested technologies heralded in every Android device sometimes by years by making everything work on the phone seamlessly.

With that said, I wouldn’t go down the deep end of the Samsung ecosystem as well for the same exact reason: Freedom.

When you get a laptop there are obvious choices and the Mac is one of the very best devices you get. But you don’t go buy a mac based on the reputation but for the specific performance that can handle your tasks and the kind of software that you plan on using. You factor in your budget and the estimated lifetime of the device and how well its specs will age, and perhaps also the resale value.

If you just buy based on the marketing claims like so many clueless people do, you will find plenty of unpleasant surprises.

No one company makes a complete lineup of perfect products no matter what they’re all trying to sell you. I wouldn’t get an earpod from apple when I can get something really decent from Bose for instance. And I wouldn’t get a Samsung smartwatch for fitness tracking when I can get a top-of-the-line Fitbit. No, you can keep your Apple Watch, I prefer a good old-fashioned regular gear and hands with a static watch face on a decent hand watch, thank you very much.

Don’t get sucked into one ecosystem buying everything a company is trying to shovel down your throat to facilitate a constant influx of cash from your pocket to their coffers. There’s invaluable freedom in the ability to navigate all ecosystems, using a variety of products from different competitors because it frees you from the tyrannical terms of use a company can suddenly force upon you, it allows you to get top quality items across the board in all your technology needs, it makes you aware of what’s really new out there in the world without being limited to the press releases of your dear good old Apple.

The people who sit, cheer, and applaud uncontrollably at the Apple launch events and WWDC conferences are the laughing stock of sober people in the tech world. Everyone looks at them in bewilderment as they look unbelievably excited about a new technology that’s been used in Samsung, Pixel, Sony, and a dozen other companies for literally YEARS. It’s the Stockholm Syndrome where Apple has its users as hostages who worship and adulate their captor.

Don’t believe all the marketing. Don’t fall prey to the claims of superiority of technical specifications. If you’re buying a $1000+ device today it’s going to be extremely capable for 3 to 5 years depending on your usage and the memory capacity you’ll get.

Tech companies, nay, all companies are not in it to be your best friend, they’re in it for the money, your money. They’ll say anything to get your hard-earned money that you’ve probably slaved away under the employment of another company that’s dipping its hands into the wallets of other people as well.

Capitalism and free markets are the reason behind the magic we see manifesting in our lives through technology and innovation. But don’t for one second shut your eyes to the viciousness of the competition over your money. Don’t dismiss the power of marketing and advertisement that is weaponized to grab your attention for enough time to make you a convincing sales pitch and convert you into a paying customer.

The article that I saw flashing on my screen seems pretty much like a paid ad in article format, I don’t know if it really is or not, but there’s a high chance that it is. Even if the author believes what he’s talking about in all earnestness, he or she is trying to sell us an iPhone.

There’s a lot of money to be made in Monopolistic markets. Apple is trying to create its own niche monopoly, and it is succeeding. So does Facebook–excuse me, Meta–as it tries to win the battle for social media platforms. So does Amazon as the main online marketplace for the entire world.

Big corporations are vying for your cash. You can certainly buy the product that you fancy, but just be wary of their attempts to suck you in as their repeat loyal customer.

It is a well-known fact in the business world, on the other side of the cash register, that your best new customer is your old customer.

Think about that when you get pitched a shiny new product that does the exact same basic things that your currently owned device does pretty damn well. Don’t get trapped into a hedonistic cycle where you’re always chasing brand-new shiny objects.

Open your eyes and try to peer behind the curtains at every chance possible. There’s always more to the magic show than what you see think you see on stage.
